Berg and Bush – Great Trek (11th – 13th October 2016)
This is a 3-day mountain bike stage race, which covers 210 km. This was a great event, very well organised and ridden through the most beautiful scenery in South Africa.
I entered and raced as an individual against the almost 700 other competitors, majority of which were in teams of two riders.
Day 1 – 100 km
The first day brought and windy conditions, and was the longest of the 3 days (100 km). I finished in 2nd position overall, and was just under a minute behind the leader.
Day 2 – 60 km
This stage was shorter, but had plenty hills and single track thrown in to test the riders. I finished together with the overall leader, and managed to close the keep the time gap going into the last stage of the race.
Day 3 – 50 km
This was the toughest, but probably the most fun stage of the race. There were plenty hills and mind-blowing single track sections, which was made a little more challenging in the wet conditions.
This stage suited me perfectly, with all the hills, and I managed to get away from the chase pack and take the win by over 4-minutes, which meant I would take the overall win for the race.
Thus was great event, which I will definitely do again. What made it better was riding it along with my City Logistics colleagues, and the team from Spar and Build It, who did unbelievably well.
Once again, thanks to City Logistics for making this race possible.
