A team of 10 City Logistics staff members, including several diabetics, attended a recent function presented by Diabetic SA, to bring more awareness of the problem to the general public. Several speakers highlighted health problems linked to diabetes, which has increased drastically internationally as well as in South Africa.
Doctor Silvana Nienaber, a diabetic for many years, highlighted the large number of diabetics who did not take the necessary care, which resulted in high incidences of limbs being amputated. Judy Adam, mother of a 15-year-old son, Matthew, explained how his being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 3 changed the lifestyle of her whole family, and how they managed the situation. One of the other key speakers was dietician Judy Peacock, who explained the importance of correct eating habits to control diabetes. Staff member Thavy Naidoo won one of the lucky raffles that was on offer on the day.
